A Music Therapist’s Perspective of the The Beamz Interactive Musical System:

“I have been using The Beamz Interactive Music System for almost a year in a neurologic rehabilitation setting, specifically with T.B.I. The Beamz is an effective and beneficial therapeutic tool that the clients respond to with enthusiasm and energy. In a group setting, I work with a variety of clients who have distinctly different motor and cognitive capacities. The Beamz is definitely a motivating factor that stimulates simultaneous motor function, hand-eye coordination and cognitive short-term memory recall. I have had physical and occupational therapists alike comment that they have observed clients proficiently using The Beamz who were unable to reach a certain distance and remember a basic shopping list. By engaging in music making with The Beamz, these individuals demonstrate heightened range of motion and sequencing instruments, exercising the same motor and memory function that they were unable to previously perform. Also, clients who do not have a rapport outside of music class displayed camaraderie, engaged in teamwork and even shared smiles when playing The Beamz together, as explained in Intervention #2: Beamz: A Team Player.

In an individual setting, I am able to take concrete data on cognitive functioning by facilitating a memory exercise and calculating the amount of times that the client is able to identify what instrument the different light beams represent. I execute this by letting the client explore the different beam instruments over the musical form once or twice. I use mnemonics to assist the client in recalling what beam represents certain instruments. After the client has had the opportunity to play and become familiarized, I instruct them to take solos on certain instruments throughout the song. The client is challenged to recall where the different instruments are. I strongly believe that every music therapist should have at least one Beamz unit in their instrument collection. These are easily adaptable for use with any population.”
